From Failure to the Top of the List

How I Failed & What I Learned

I started with Internet marketing several years ago when my wife and I decided to launch a yoga supplies website. We failed. Miserably. In part, we had no idea what we were doing.

Failing really bothered me. I spent countless sleepless nights reading, studying and testing search engine marketing techniques.

When my wife then announced that she was going to launch a swim school, I was prepared to succeed.

Optimizing for Local Search

Our focus was to rank well on local searches.

  • On-site Optimization: I identified high traffic keywords were we could effectively compete. Each page of the website was then optimized for our keywords.
  • Off-site Link Building: I spent time building links back to the website through local directories. Using press releases, we also built links from news sites.

The Results

For most "swim" related keywords, we rank on the first page of search results. And for the most important keywords, we are in the top three.

We also use our Google Places page (shown left) to make sure that we rank in the Google Maps results. All together, we usually have several results on the first page for our sites.
